BARNETT, JR., JAMES D. 53, of Port Republic, passed away at home on September 12, 2001. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa.
James was medically retired from the United States Marine Corps where he had served with distinction in the Vietnam War and been awarded the Bronze Star. He attended St. Paul UMC in Port Republic during his youth and later jointed Emmaus UMC in Smithville. James sometimes attended New Life Church in Egg Harbor Township. At Emmaus, he assisted in the video taping of services, was a choir member and did art work in many ways including the crafting of a commemorative plate, creating a portrait and drafting the bulletin. James was an accomplished artist and avid golfer. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with his family. He was the family comedian. He was currently enrolled in the Liberty Baptist Bible School. He was a member of the DAV, American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his son, James D. Barnett III and his wife, Kelly of Casper, Wyoming; grandchildren, Kieran and Jaycee Mae; his mother, Margaret Barnett of Port Republic; brothers and sisters, John Barnett of Moravian Falls, North Carolina, Margie Foster of Smithville, Debbie Gallegos of Galloway, Dolores Dill, of Lincoln, ME, Robin LaBelle of Port Republic, Melanie Champion of Germania, Pamela Kellum of Linwood, Michael Barnett and Patti Wythe, both of Port Republic; maternal grandfather, William Gilbert of Largo, Florida; aunt, Ethel Sadler of Largo, Florida; aunt Sarah Slagel and her husband John and family; aunt Rosemary Weber and her husband Art and family; aunt Vera Tanzler; uncle Tom Barnett and his wife Margaret and family; the Eill families and numerous nieces and nephews; and is predeceased by his father, James D. Barnett and sister, Sharon Higbee.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at the Emmaus United Methodist Church, 708 E. Moss Mill Road, Smithville. Burial will be at the Port Republic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7PM until 9 PM Monday evening at the church. Arrangements by Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, Northfield.
