Safety Week Opens With Two Killed in Auto Accidents
Pedestrian and Man Changing Tire Received Fatal Injuries on Sunday
Two persons were killed in automobile accidents in Burlington county during the week-end.
They were Walter Durham, 26, who lived near Columbus, and Jacob Kluga, 58, of Pemberton.
Sunday, the day they died, was the first day of safety week in New Jersey.
Durham died at 2.15 P. M. on Sunday in the Burlington County Hospital,
as as [sic] a result of injuries received when struck by an automobile at 2 A. M. on Route 39,
Springfield township, three miles south of Columbus. He was changing a tire while parked at the side of the road,
he told Columbus state police. According to the troopers, Durham was hit by a car driven by Clifford Worrell, 19,
of Main street, Medford. Durham received fractures of both legs and a crushed left hand.
Worrell's nose was torn off as a result of being thrown against the windshield of his car.
Coroner George A. Whomsley issued a death certificate. Worrell was held without bail Sunday afternoon
by Justice of the Peace Thomas J. Piston, Brown's Mills, on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Clifford Worrell, 18, of Medford, who pleaded non vult to involuntary homicide by automobile,
was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation for two years.
He was assessed $50 court costs to be paid immediately and $50 more costs to be paid during the term of his probation.
Worrell, while driving on Route 30 in Springfield township, at 1:30 A. M. on September 27, 1935 [sic],
struck Walter Durham, of the Georgetown-Columbus road, and inflicted injuries that caused the man's death.
Durham's car was at the side of the road at the time, engaged in changing a tire.
Worrell was badly injured in the accident.
- Walter was buried in Pointville Cemetery, Pointville, New Jersey.
