CRASH THAT KILLED PEDESTRIAN UNDER INVESTIGATION
By NEAL BUCCINO Staff Writer, (609) 272-7211
Police are still investigating a sport utility vehicle accident that killed Faamanu Muasau, a 46-year-old Smithville resident, when he was walking along Route 9 in Smithville Wednesday.
Muasau, of 11 N. Old New York Road, was walking in the grass about seven feet from the road when Meryl R. Elfant's vehicle left the road and struck him, Township Police Detective Sgt. Peter Romanelli said. Elfant, 57, of Marlboro, was driving south when her SUV left the road and struck the victim, a signpost, a telephone and two trees, Romanelli said. The accident took place just south of Route 9's intersection with Old New York Road.
Although Elfant was brought to the police station after the accident, Romanelli said Thursday that police have not yet determined the reason her car left the road. Results from Elfant's blood alcohol content were not yet available, and Romanelli couldn't comment on whether she had any medical conditions that could have contributed to the crash.
Galloway Police Patrolman Raymond Casanova is investigating the accident and Patrolman Jodi Jucciarone is reconstructing the accident, Romanelli said.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Galloway Police Department at 652-3705.
Callers may leave anonymous information at the department's tip line by dialing extension 7, or call Atlantic County Crime Stoppers at (800) 658-TIPS. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and the anonymous caller will receive a code number for identification. If a tip leads to an arrest and conviction, the caller will receive a cash reward.
