Rev. Chester Perkins
The Rev. Chester Perkins, 86, of Elwood, died Saturday at Community Hospital in Anderson.
He was born Aug. 16, 1915, in Elwood.
He retired in 1978 from Indiana-Michigan Electric Company after 30 years of service. He was a pastor for 42
years serving several area churches. He served his last full-time position from 1964 to 1980 at the Upper Deer Creek
United Church of Christ in Galveston. He served the Sand Bank Church in Tipton from 1938 to 1940. He served the Buffalo
United Church of Christ from 1939-1946, Prairieville Church from 1943-1944, Tippecanoe Church at Winemac from 1940-1946,
Antioch Church at Swayzee from 1946-1948, New Hope Church at Tipton from 1949-1964, and the East Main Street United Church
of Christ at Greentown from 1972-1978.
He attended Butler University and Taylor University and was ordained as a minister in 1957. He was a member
of the Elwood Optimist Club and since retirement attended several churches including the First Baptist Church in Alexandria
and the Chesterfield Chrsitian Church.
He married Ruth B. Baker Aug. 30, 1941. She died Feb. 1, 1991. He later married Fern (Maynard) Hitchens,
who is also deceased.
Survivors include a stepson, Vernard E. Skinner of Chesterfield; five stepgrandchildren; 13
stepgreat-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his foster parents, C. F. and Minnie Perkins; his wives; and several brothers and
sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Copher & Fesler Funeral Home, with the Revs. Mike Weber
and Cliff Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Elwood Optimist Club or the American Heart Association.
