- Obituary, funeral program, 16 Mar 1984, courtesy of Lishia Durham Heard:
Death is not the enemy of life, but its friend, for it is the knowledge that our years are limited which makes
them so precious. It is the truth that time is but lent to us which makes us at our best, look upon years as a trust
handed into our temporary keeping.
The temororary keeping of this earthly life ended for our father, RAYMOND THOMPSON, JR, on Thursday, March 8,
1984 in Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. Raymond, the first born son of the late Raymond
Thompson, Sr., and his wife Dorothy Greenage Thompson Downs was born December 29, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He
was educated in the public schools of Unionville, Pennsylvania.
In June of 1939 he married Florine Saunders of Coatesville, Pennsylvania and to this union two children were
born: Maxine Cecilia and Raymond Charles. In January of 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy and after two years service he was
honorably discharged in 1946.
Raymond, always industrious and hard-working, worked at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Westinghouse Corporation,
U.S. Postal Service and later the Pancoast Construction Company of Delaware County from where he retired in 1975.
In July, 1955 Raymond and his daughter joined Bethel AME Church, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania where he received
christian baptism under the pastorate of the late Reverend Isaac N. Patterson, III.
In April 1983 illness overtook his body and following periods of hospitalization and convalescence at home,
where his son Raymond cared for him until the end came, when the Lord mercifully took him.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Downs; one daughter, Maxine Thompson Moore; one son,
Raymond Charles Thompson; one sister, Rita Drew of Detroit, Michigan; aunts, uncles, cousins, one niece, one nephew,
other relatives and many, many friends.
- Raymond was buried in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, Pennsylvania.
