Don R. Zimmerman
Alexandria, Ind.–Don R. Zimmerman, 77, died Saturday at his home after an extended illness.
He was born in Tipton, the son of Ralph R. and Nora O'Neill Zimmerman.
He moved to Alexandria from South Bend in 1975. He retired in 1975 as district manager of the Social
Security offices in Madison, Vincennes and Wausau, Wis. He worked for the Social Security Administration a total
of 32 years.
He was a member of Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church, Alexandria. He was a 52-year member of the
American Legion, a past commander of Kokomo Post 6 and Alexandria Post 87 and involved in Madison County 40 and 8.
He was a member of the Alexandria Elks Lodge 478, where he had served as secretary and Alexandria Eagles Lodge 1771.
He was a 1941 graduate of Concordia Teacher's College in River Forest, Ill.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Foster of Alexandria; a son, Don Zimmerman Jr. of Elkhart; a brother,
Horace Zimmerman of Atlanta; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 51 years, Helen Durham Zimmerman, who died
Oct. 12, 1996.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Owens Funeral Home, Alexandria with Pastor Joseph
Stark III officiating. Burial will be at Park View Cemetery in Alexandria, with full military honors by the
Alexandria American Legion.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The Alexandria American Legion will conduct
a memorial service tonight at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church or the Hospice Program of St.
John's Medical Center through the funeral home.
